The New York Times , May 20, 2024: “2 Liberal Groups to Spend $5 Million on State Supreme Court Races”
When the Supreme Court declared that it would not intervene to protect voters from partisan gerrymandering in the Rucho case in 2019, and then later ripped away the constitutional right to safe and healthy abortions in the Dobbs case in 2022, it became so much more clear that state courts are a critical line of defense to protect our rights, which we have to protect.

But ideologically charged state supreme courts have still issued dangerous rulings that further put our democracy and our reproductive rights in danger.

They’ve threatened our democracy with decisions that overturned fair maps like those in North Carolina or restricted voters’ ability to make their voices heard. And some courts have allowed draconian laws to take effect, winding the clock back decades on reproductive rights.

These backwards decisions are the result of a continued effort by powerful special interests and out-of-touch politicians to install partisan justices who put ideology ahead of legal principle and precedent.

We have to fight back. That’s why today we’re proud to announce our partnership with Planned Parenthood Votes to invest a combined $5 million, at least, in state supreme court races — to elect fair-minded judges who will protect voters against attacks on our democracy and our reproductive rights.

The unfortunate reality is that state courts continue to assault reproductive freedom and endanger the ability for all communities to be represented fairly.

In Florida and Arizona, state courts have upheld extreme state abortion bans. In Alabama, the dangerous precedent set forth by the state court’s IVF decision will no doubt limit necessary reproductive care. It is not surprising that these are the same states our movement has been fighting in year after year to protect fair maps and push back against gerrymandering.

We can’t allow these assaults to continue. Our new partnership with Planned Parenthood Votes is laser-focused on ensuring that fair-minded judges are elected to state supreme courts across the country. And we need your support, too!

We’re working toward investing a combined $5 million in these efforts, at least, because having an impact on these races takes serious resources. Show your support for our partnership with Planned Parenthood Votes by rushing a donation to protect democracy and reproductive rights today! → [[link removed]]
