This past weekend, the NRA hosted their annual convention in Texas (a state with some of the most lax gun laws and worst mass shootings) and once more, Donald Trump gave a keynote address rife with lies and gun lobby talking points.
Here are just some of the ridiculous (and scary) things he said this weekend – and why they’re wrong:
Trump said, “I was going to say ‘he’s full of bullsh*t’ but I don’t want to use bad language cause there are a lot of young [kids here]”
The truth is, if Trump had any concern for our children, he’d care about ending gun violence which is now the number one killer of kids and teens in the United States.
Trump said, “Crooked Joe has a 40 year record or trying to rip firearms out of the hands of law abiding citizens”
The truth is, President Biden has a 40 year record of taking on the NRA and winning. Biden helped pass the original assault weapons ban as a Senator and has enacted life-saving executive orders against gun violence during his presidency.
Trump said, “The Administration is trying to crush independent firearms dealers by revoking their licenses if they make a single error even in very unimportant paperwork…”
The truth is that President Biden’s executive order to close the 'gun show loophole' and 'online sale loophole' is common sense and will only ensure those who engage in the business of selling firearms are taking the necessary precautions we require of all other licensed gun sellers.
Trump said, “In my second term we will roll back every Biden attack on the Second Amendment.”
Now this one, we do believe, John. Trump spent his first term doing mercilessly doing the NRA’s bidding and he surely will again. A Trump presidency is a threat to all the progress that we have made under Biden’s leadership.
The NRA spent $30 million to elect Trump in 2016 and they’ll certainly use all the money they still have (that Wayne LaPierre didn’t use to buy yachts) to elect him in 2024. We cannot let that happen, John.
