Friend,
As co-chair of the bipartisan Congressional Public Service Loan Forgiveness Caucus, I have been working over the last several years to expand and improve a student loan forgiveness program known as the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program.
Many schoolteachers, military, police officers, nurses, fire fighters and others, can benefit from the PSLF program. Most of them shoulder large student loan debts. From reaching across the aisle to fix inefficiencies in the PSLF system to introducing legislation to categorize local ministers as “first responders”, I have worked in Congress for the past several years to make this student loan forgiveness program better and stronger.
Today, I am proud to share with you some great results we are finally getting that will help ease the student loan burden for those who serve in our neighborhoods and communities. In just my PA-02 congressional district, 1,270 borrowers enrolled in the PSLF program have received a total of $91,600,000 in debt relief since October 1, 2021. These numbers come directly from the U.S. Department of Education.
The borrowers who benefit from this program form the backbone of our city and region. Time after time they consistently step up to help their communities without hesitation. We must do our part in Congress to support their efforts. The federal Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program was created in 2007 in response to concerns of public sector employers over difficulties attracting and retaining skilled professionals to fill chronically vacant positions.
If you are interested in learning more about enrolling in the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program, visit their web page here, or contact one of my 3 district offices and one of my staff members would be glad to help you.
Sincerely
Brendan F. Boyle
Member of Congress
