The partisan takeovers of state courts that we've seen over the last few years are some of the worst in history, John.
The tricks and tactics that the GOP used -- led by Mitch McConnell -- to recalibrate the federal courts have stacked the Supreme Court with the likes of Samuel Alito, Brett Kavanaugh, Neil Gorsuch, and Amy Coney Barrett. The lower, less recognizable Courts of Appeals and District Courts are worse -- riddled with unqualified justices slammed through the Senate at the behest of Trump and the billionaires who bankroll the MAGA Republican movement.
Now dark money groups -- like the ultraconservative Federalist Society -- have backed hundreds of extremist judges for state courts. They've exported these same Mitch McConnell tactics bend courts across the country to approve gerrymandered voting maps that have given Republicans immense advantages in our elections, restricted abortion rights, and so much more.
That's where we come in. It's going to take a progressive grassroots movement based around people like us -- people who care about our rights, our democracy, our environment, and our right to vote -- to push back on the GOP's decades-long effort to reshape our courts to their selfish, wrongheaded principles.
