Two utility executives were recently indicted for paying $4.3 million in bribes to the chair of the Ohio Public Utilities Commission!
This isn’t just happening in Ohio, John. According to a recent analysis, this scandal is part of a generational and historic resurgence of fraud and corruption in the utility sector, which has cost customers at least $6.6 billion.1
These corrupt utility companies are turning to criminal behavior to block the transition to renewable energy, hold on to their monopolies, and continue making massive profits — while our planet burns and consumers continue to pay more and more to heat and cool their homes.
It’s despicable — but given the history of utilities and the fossil fuel industry, it’s not surprising in the slightest.
The good news is that both utilities and state regulators are ultimately vulnerable to public pressure. If enough people speak up, call them out for their corruption, and demand change, we can hold them accountable.
