Dear friends,
This is a rough time for everyone, and many of us in the autistic community are experiencing a lot of anxiety, uncertainty and stress. Most of us have had to change our routines in some way to keep ourselves and the people we love safe. Many of us are worried about what happens next. ASAN has been working hard to get our community through the current crisis as safely as possible. You can read more about what we’re working on here and here. But after a hard week, we also wanted to reach out and add some joy to your inbox by sharing the things that are cheering us up in this especially difficult time.
Since we’ve been working from home, we’re taking comfort in spending time with our pets, so we thought we’d start by introducing our furry coworkers to you.
Katy Spoon
Katy Spoon is a new addition to Zoe’s family! She loves stuffed toys, hates loud noises, and can lie down on command — but she’ll only do it on a comfy rug.
Galaxy
Galaxy is a fluffy cat who lives with Julia. She enjoys boxes, yelling, and sitting on Julia’s keyboard.
Luke
Reid’s dog Luke is a very chill friend, who believes that he is a lap dog. Don’t tell him otherwise. He’s also so self-sufficient that he will play fetch with himself!
Ellie
Adopted from a rescue group, Kelly’s rabbit Ellie is a loving creature who will go to great lengths for grapes or forbidden pretzels.
Oreo
Oreo is a black and white kitty who believes that Jean’s work desk makes the best nap spot. Jean’s family also has a stuffed animal version of Oreo, named Hydrox.
Kieran
Kieran is a large black kitty who loves to follow Noor around his friend’s house. He screams upon seeing him, and drools when patted. He’s supposed to stay behind a baby gate, but can open it at will if he thinks someone on the other side might pet him.
We hope that our fuzzy friends can bring you a moment of calm in these chaotic times. They’re certainly helping us keep our spirits up while we work to make sure the disability community’s needs are met.
Some of you have reached out asking how you can help. One thing you can do is be on the lookout for more action alerts -- in the coming weeks, we’ll be reaching out with more ways you can hold Congress accountable. If you are able to donate, your donation funds our work to keep people with disabilities safe through the COVID-19 pandemic. And if all you can do right now is get yourself through the day, that is important work, and we’re rooting for you.
We’re grateful that you’re part of our community, and we wish you all the best — and hope you like cute animal pictures as much as we do!
Warmly,
The ASAN Team
