Passing Legislation to Support the Police
During National Police Week, the House passed several bills with my support to support our law enforcement.
On Thursday, we passed H.R. 354, the Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act (LEOSA) Reform Act, which will expand upon carrying privileges for qualified law enforcement officers and reduce unnecessary burdens to provide flexibility in re-certification intervals for retired officers.
This legislation will allow qualified active and retired law enforcement officers to carry concealed firearms and ammunition in school zones, national parks, private property open to the public, and in some federal facilities open to the public.
We also passed H.R. 7343, the Detain and Deport Illegal Aliens Who Assault Cops Act. Under the Biden administration, we've seen the influx of millions of illegal immigrants who pose countless threats to American citizens as it is. Our law enforcement officers have enough to deal with, so there shouldn't be any misconceptions about how individuals who come here illegally should be handled if an officer is assaulted.
This legislation requires ICE to arrest illegal immigrants who assault law enforcement officers and directs that offending individuals be detained until they are removed from the country.
Illegal immigrants should face consequences for assaulting anyone who dedicated their lives to protecting and serving the American people.
Finally, we passed H.R.8146, the Police Our Border Act. This legislation will require the Attorney General to directly report to Congress how the crisis at our nation's southern border has impacted our law enforcement.
The financial and operational burdens that have resulted from our weak borders cannot be ignored. This report will highlight the risks officers face, the injuries they sustain, and the negative impact this has had on our law enforcement.
Advocating for Georgia's Priorities During Upcoming Legislative Reviews
As your Representative, I am honored to serve as Vice Chair of the House Agriculture Committee and as a member of the House Armed Services Committee (HASC) and the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence (HPSCI). These committees are all vitally important to Georgia's Eighth District.
Later this week, two committee markups are scheduled for legislation critical for our district.
HASC will mark up the FY25 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) on May 22nd, and the House Ag Committee will mark up the Farm Bill on May 23rd.
I have heard many of your thoughts regarding both bills, and I will continue to advocate for the priorities of Georgia's defense and agriculture communities as we review this legislation.
