Samuel --
Seven years ago, the American auto industry -- an icon of
our nation's ingenuity and middle class prosperity -- was on
the brink of collapse. Plants were closing and hundreds of
thousands of workers were getting laid off. When I came into
office, some folks told me that it was just too late to turn
things around. But I knew that wasn't the case. We wouldn't
turn our backs on American workers or American
manufacturing.
And last year, we saw American auto sales hit an all-time
high. I went to the Detroit Auto Show last week to see this
progress firsthand. And in that one city, I saw something that
was not unlike what our whole country has gone through
these past few years. We've gone from crisis to recovery to
resurgence. We're on a 70-month streak of job creation,
we've made historic investments in clean energy, we've
changed the way we pay for college, and we've brought
almost 18 million Americans into our health care system.
So when Republicans are saying that things are worse
than they were before I took office, I'm not sure where
they're looking. You can't lead for the future while ignoring
the progress of the past. It just doesn't work that way.
Americans can do anything, Samuel. I really believe that.
Even when it's challenging and it seems like things are
changing around us at a faster pace than we can keep up
with, I know we can do amazing things when we put our
minds to it and work together. But we need leaders who
have the vision to lead us forward, not drag us back.
Democrats need 35,000 new grassroots donations before
the end of the month, if you can, pitch in $3 or more and
help us hit that goal:
