The Arizona Attorney General’s Office is committed to protecting consumers and providing information to help recognize and avoid consumer fraud. As Attorney General, I have made it a top priority to hold fraudsters accountable, and our administration has returned nearly $100 million to Arizona consumers who have been swindled. When the COVID-19 virus reached the United States, charlatans launched innovative scams and schemes to take advantage of the unsuspecting, and we are responding to this new threat.
Our office is receiving an increasing array of complaints from Arizonans reporting everything from fake miracle cures, to thieves posing as door-to-door sanitization service providers, and electronic correspondence from government impostors requesting personal and financial information. This in addition to the always irritating robocalls and phishing emails. It’s clear that con artists are attempting to take advantage of the headlines to exploit the anxieties of vulnerable consumers, many of whom are seniors, over COVID-19 concerns.
Rest assured the Attorney General’s Office is here to serve Arizonans and is working around the clock to combat this fraudulent activity, and to keep the public informed. Recently, we launched a new webpage (www.AZAG.gov/COVID-19) with updates on the latest COVID-19 scams. We also encourage everyone who believes they have been a victim of consumer fraud, to report it at www.AZAG.gov.
On Tuesday, April 14, 2020, at 2:00 PM AZ Time, I will be joining Congresswoman Lesko for a telephone town hall to discuss the latest COVID-19 consumer scams and provide tips for keeping you and your loved ones safe. I hope you can join us.
With COVID-19, Arizona is taking precautions to help flatten the curve, and we must also prevent scammers from flattening our bank accounts.
