This week, Gov. Northam made two important announcements regarding upcoming elections in Virginia. 1) Using his existing statutory authority, primary elections scheduled for June 9th will now be held 14 days later on June 23rd. 2) The Governor has requested that general elections for municipal offices such as City Council originally scheduled for May 5th be moved to coincide with the general elections for federal offices on Nov. 3. This request must be approved by the General Assembly and is therefor subject to change.
In person as well as absentee voting will be available for the June primary on the new date. All existing absentee ballot requests will still be fulfilled and deadlines to request and submit an absentee ballot will be extended. These extended deadline dates have not yet been determined.
Should the General Assembly approve the Governor's request to move the May municipal elections, absentee ballots which have already been cast for these elections will be void and voters will have the opportunity to vote for their local elected officials in November.
