Dear John,

Add your name: It’s time for a Workers’ Bill of Rights during the COVID-19 crisis

With the COVID-19 crisis wreaking havoc on our economy, pushing millions of people out of work and endangering essential workers, it is more important than ever that we stand together to advocate for working people.

Please add your name: Support the Workers’ Bill of Rights

It’s time for our elected leaders to hear from us about what working people need to get through this crisis. It’s time that collectively we advocate for an economy that prioritizes the interests of those who are most vulnerable during the COVID-19 pandemic. Please add your name today in support of the Workers’ Bill of Rights!

Millions of Californians filing for unemployment

Yesterday the US Department of Labor reported that over the past three weeks nearly two million California workers have applied for unemployment – almost 10% of the total workforce of the state. While workers in California typically see a maximum unemployment benefit of $450 a week, starting this coming week the federal CARES Act will start providing an additional $600 per week on top of typical benefits for up to four months.

While there are reports of the EDD website crashing with the surge in applicants, all CFT members are advised to attempt to file an unemployment insurance claim if you have lost your job or have had your hours reduced.

CFT staff are working hard to develop further guidance to assist members in navigating the unemployment system. A more substantive update should be ready by next week.

Remember to take a moment to fill out the Census this weekend

Please remember to take a few moments this weekend to fill out the US Census. Filling out the questionnaire is quick, easy, and can be done online, by phone (844-330-2020), or by mail.

Every 10 years, the federal government is required to count everyone in the United States. Your census response influences funding for schools, businesses and hospitals in your community and has never been more important than it is today.

We hope you have a safe and healthy weekend

Whether you are honoring Passover, celebrating Easter, preparing for Ramadan, or anticipating another event, we hope you have the opportunity to enjoy this weekend. It is so important to maintain our physical and mental health, so please stay safe and healthy.
