Dear john , I hope that you and your family are well. It’s been a busy week here in Washington as we commemorated Police Week and honored America's pastor and the Pastor to Presidents, the Reverend Billy Graham. We have so many incredible law enforcement officers who work every day to keep us safe – it’s always a privilege to spend time with and thank our local officers. May we also take time to honor the brave men who lost their lives last month in Charlotte as they charged headlong into danger. Honoring Billy Graham On Thursday, I attended an unveiling ceremony for North Carolina’s new statue honoring the life and legacy of Reverend Billy Graham. The Pastor to Presidents will now be memorialized in the Capitol’s Statuary Hall. | As you may know, each state commissions and places in the Capitol two statues of notable individuals to represent the state. I’ve worked on this effort since my time in the state legislature, and yesterday’s ceremony was poignant and inspiring. It’s been an honor to be part of the process to have our state represented here in the Capitol by the Reverend Billy Graham. WATCH: Reverend Graham Statue Unveiling Billy Graham will always be America’s pastor, and his ministry will transform the lives of Americans for generations to come. Supporting Law Enforcement I’m excited to report that my legislation, the Improving Law Enforcement Officer Safety and Wellness Through Data Act, passed the House on Wednesday. The leftist “Defund the Police” movement and resulting destructive policies have made our communities less safe and fueled a surge of violence against the brave law enforcement officers who work every day to keep Americans safe. | This bill is simple: It will expand data collected so we better understand the violence our law enforcement officers face each and every day they put on the uniform so that we can better combat this scourge of violence against those who serve. It will also review the effectiveness of current programs that support law enforcement to ensure that our men and women in blue have the resources they need to do their jobs. It’s only common sense to pass this bill and to help protect who defend us. I’m proud to back the blue and hope to see this bill pass the Senate and be signed into law. TWEET: Supporting police on the House floor Investigating the Chinese Illegal Immigration Surge This past week, I convened a hearing on a critical topic for the security of our nation – the unprecedented surge in Chinese nationals illegally crossing our southern border. | As I said in opening the hearing - Border Patrol records show that from 2007 to 2021 encounters of Chinese nationals illegally entering the United States at the Southwest border were relatively rare. That changed dramatically under Biden, as you can see from the above graph. In the last seven months, from October to April, Border Patrol has already encountered 27,496 Chinese nationals – shattering last year’s total. These individuals receive minimal vetting and are flooding into our nation. TWEET: We *should* all agree—every migrant entering the U.S. should be vetted. Transnational criminal organizations and the CCP see our open border as an opportunity. This surge of Chinese nationals at our border without recent precedent presents a major national security vulnerability, ripe for exploitation. You can watch my full opening statement and the entire hearing here: | Combatting Lawlessness in the Nation’s Capital Despite skyrocketing violent crime in Washington, the D.C. Council continue their soft-on-crime policies that put residents and visitor’s lives at risk. D.C. is a federal district, and Americans should be able to visit our nation’s capital without worrying about being carjacked, robbed, or killed. However, there was a troubling trend during debate on the DC CRIMES Act, introduced by my friend, Byron Donalds. Not all of my colleagues agreed that we should do all we can to stop the uptick in crime in our nation’s capital. It is clearer than ever that we need to return to a culture of law and order. | I was proud to speak on the House floor in support of a bill to help keep Americans safe in D.C., and to see it pass the House.
Biden’s Secret Audio Tapes Special Counsel Robert Hur surprised no one when he described Joe Biden as an “elderly man with a poor memory.” He wrote that a jury would not find Biden’s mental capacity at a high enough level to commit a crime. Biden’s DOJ is now fighting tooth and nail to BLOCK the audio recordings of those special counsel interviews from ever seeing the light of day. He is petrified of the American people seeing the extent of his unfitness to serve. I laid out the laughable legal “reasoning” and why there is no excuse to hide the special counsel tapes from Congress as we voted in the House Judiciary Committee to hold AG Garland in contempt for refusing to hand over the audio to our investigators. | These young men, and the brave law enforcement officers who restored law and order in the face of chaos, deserve our support and praise.
