John,
Today, lawmakers failed to pass the RCV Local Option bill off the House Floor. This is obviously not the result we were hoping for, and as a result voters across the state will now have to wait even longer to reap the benefits of ranked choice voting elections.
While we are disappointed that the bill fell short of the votes it needed to pass today, we are grateful to Speaker Hortman for prioritizing this discussion and bringing the bill forward, Chief Author Cedrick Frazier for his unwavering leadership, and all the members who voted in support! We look forward to continuing this important work and the opportunity for bipartisan support. Minnesota communities, legislators, and voters are seeking the option to use ranked choice voting, and we are committed to making this possible and securing the support necessary for a future vote.
Despite today’s setback, the tireless efforts of so many democracy activists in support of this bill have been inspiring and critical to getting us this far. And while the push for RCV this session has ended, we’re already looking forward to how we can make sure Minnesota continues to be a leader in democracy reform. This includes electing the next generation of RCV lawmakers this fall, protecting RCV in the Minnesota cities that already use it, and educating voters in the 2025 municipal RCV elections.
Thank you again for your support.
