Ghazala Hashmi is no stranger to challenges.
When she first ran for the Virginia State Senate in 2019, she was a political outsider. No one tapped her to run, no big groups funded her primary race, and no one thought she'd be able to pull an upset in a long-held Republican seat, but she didn't entertain those doubts.
She started her campaign to protect our communities from bigotry, to protect our rights to make our own reproductive health care decisions, and to protect funding for public education. She ran because it was the right thing to do.
All the odds were against her...and she won.
Her seat brought us the Democratic majority that raised Virginia's minimum wage, rolled back arcane abortion restrictions, expanded voting access, passed historic gun safety legislation, protected LGBTQIA+ rights, and kept funding in our public schools.
