John,
It’s been almost two years since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. Our country has seen unprecedented attacks on reproductive freedoms – from conservative judges, state legislatures, and activist groups. Abortion is now restricted or outright banned in over 20 states — including our neighbor, Idaho.
For many Idaho residents, crossing the border into Oregon will be the easiest way to access safe reproductive care. That’s why I’m thankful that Oregonians have fought hard to have some of the strongest protections for reproductive rights in the country.
But the Dobbs decision made it clear that even the rights we consider most fundamental are always at risk.
That’s why I’ve been proactive in fighting to protect abortion access — joining with 20 of my fellow governors to form the Reproductive Freedom Alliance: a historic, nonpartisan coalition committed to protecting and expanding reproductive freedom across the nation.
The governors who make up this alliance represent over 170 million Americans collectively who can breathe easier knowing their elected officials have their back.
I will continue to be a fierce advocate for abortion access in Oregon. After the initial efforts to restrict access to mifepristone, my administration worked to secure a three-year supply of the drug to safeguard access to medication abortion in our state. I also committed to protect all providers who prescribe the drug and any patients who arrive from out-of-state to receive care.
This fight is not over. Mifepristone access is in the hands of the hyper-partisan Supreme Court, and far-right attacks on abortion are not slowing down.
