Governor Walz Announces Historic Investment in Minnesota Semiconductor Manufacturing

Governor Walz delivers remarks at Polar

On Monday, Governor Walz, the U.S. Department of Commerce, state and regional economic development officials, and company leaders announced Polar Semiconductor will invest $525 million to expand its Bloomington manufacturing facility, leveraging $120 million in direct funding as part of the U.S. CHIPS and Science Act and a $75 million investment from the Minnesota Forward Fund, a State of Minnesota initiative to fuel business expansion.  

*"As a top state for innovation in manufacturing, education, and workforce training, Minnesota has an established reputation as a leader in the growing high-tech economy," *said Governor Walz.* "We have been consistent and creative in our support for companies like Polar Semiconductor that want to establish and grow their businesses here in Minnesota. We’re grateful to the Commerce Department for its commitment to Minnesota’s future and its partnership with our state."*

Lieutenant Governor Flanagan Encourages Students to Complete FAFSA

On Monday, Lieutenant Governor Flanagan joined the higher education community to urge students to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form. Currently, FAFSA completion rates are down 20.5 percent nationally. In Minnesota, completions are down 16 percent from last year, due in part to technical difficulties associated the with new FAFSA form launched in December. The U.S. Department of Education has worked to address all issues with the form, and across the U.S. leaders are encouraging students to finish filing.

*"A student’s financial aid package is often the determining factor in whether they enroll,"* Lieutenant Governor Flanagan said*. "In Minnesota, we have made historic investments to better support our students and break down financial barriers to ensure anyone who wants to attend college has that opportunity. To all Minnesotans: the time to apply for financial aid is now."*

Governor Walz Orders Flags at Half-Staff in Honor of Peace Officer Memorial Day [ [link removed] ]

Governor Walz delivers remarks at Peace Officer Memorial Day

Governor Walz ordered all United States and Minnesota flags to be flown at half-staff at all state buildings in the State of Minnesota, from sunrise until sunset on Wednesday, May 15, 2024 in honor of peace officers who have been killed or injured in the line of duty. Governor Walz proclaimed May 15, 2024 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and May 12-18 as Police Week in the State of Minnesota.

*"Today we honor the peace officers who gave their lives to protect ours. We thank the more than 10,499 law enforcement officers in Minnesota who serve in 408 law enforcement agencies for their dedication and services to Minnesota communities,"* said Governor Walz.

Governor Walz Announces $6 Million in Child Care Grants

On Wednesday, Governor Walz announced $6.2 million in new grants to expand child care across the state. The Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) has awarded 21 organizations with Child Care Economic Development Grants – the state’s largest-ever round of funding for this program. The funding is expected to increase child care program capacity by 2,241 slots. 

*"Making Minnesota the best state for children and families starts with child care," *said Governor Walz. *"Accessible, quality child care is critical not only for strong child development, but also for the economic wellbeing of the families in our state. These grants will increase access to child care and help more Minnesotans enter the workforce, growing our labor force and economy."*

*"Child care businesses and professionals are essential to our economy – they’re the workforce behind the workforce,"* said Lieutenant Governor Flanagan. *"**I’m proud of the historic investments we made in child care last session and our continued efforts to build on these wins. We want to ensure families across the state have access to high quality, affordable child care and that child care businesses have the supports they need to succeed."*

Governor Walz, Lieutenant Governor Flanagan Share Tips to Prevent Spread of Invasive Species This Summer

LT. Phil Mohs shares information to press about K9 units use in detecting zebra mussels

On Thursday, Governor Walz and Lieutenant Governor Flanagan visited Lake Phalen to share best practices to prevent the spread of invasive species this summer, including zebra mussels. Zebra mussels have been confirmed in 311 Minnesota lakes and wetlands.

*"Zebra mussels threaten Minnesota’s lakes and wetlands – which is why our aquatic invasive species experts will be working across the state, all summer long, to keep our waters clean,"* said Governor Walz. *"I’m grateful for their work to protect the land of 10,000 lakes."*

*"Everything we love about Minnesota summers on the water is threatened by invasive species like zebra mussels," *said Lieutenant Governor Flanagan. *"The good news: We have aquatic invasive species experts across the state helping Minnesotans keep our waters clean."*
