Weekend Reading

Dear Friend,

Since Israel expanded its airstrikes and sent tanks into Rafah last week, hundreds of thousands of Palestinians have fled the area, including AFSC staff. Israel has also prevented food, medicine, and other life-saving aid from entering Gaza. In this video, AFSC’s Kerri Kennedy shares a firsthand account from Serena, one of our staff members on the ground. Amid the worsening situation, Serena and AFSC partners managed to deliver food parcels to displaced families in Al Amal camp. Watch the video. [link removed]

Here are this week's picks to inform and support your activism:

Demanding access to affordable water in Georgia: [link removed] Since 2014, residents in DeKalb County, Georgia, have received outrageously high water bills—up to tens of thousands of dollars. Faulty meters and neglected infrastructure damage explained the spikes. Still, the county has forced residents to bear the burden of exorbitant bills. Some people have faced water shutoffs and liens on their homes. Read more about how residents are working to stop this injustice, with support from AFSC.

What you need to know about the war in Sudan: [link removed] Over the past year, the war in Sudan has claimed thousands of lives and displaced millions more. Today, about 25 million Sudanese need humanitarian support. Despite growing fears of another genocide, global media coverage of the war has been sparse. Much of the international community has also largely ignored this crisis. Learn more about what’s happening in this article from AFSC’s Moses Chasieh and Pauline Muchina. You can take action by sending a message to Congress today. [link removed]

Video: Think twice before calling the police: [link removed] What is our responsibility to ensure police do not inflict harm on community members? Is it always right to call 911 even when our safety or that of others is at risk? In this QuakerSpeak video from Friends Journal, AFSC’s Brian Blackmore explores these questions. Watch to learn more and reflect on what you might do when it feels imperative to call the police.

Protecting employment and worker rights for migrants (May 28, 7 p.m. ET / 4 p.m. PT): [link removed] Join the next monthly webinar in our migration justice series. This month, we’ll hear from AFSC staff in Oregon and California about the issues immigrant workers face. We’ll also explore opportunities for advocacy to ensure all workers have access to labor protections. This webinar will be bilingual in English [link removed] and Spanish [link removed] .

AFSC’s 2023 annual report: [link removed] We are proud to share with you the annual report from our past fiscal year. Our report includes highlights from our worldwide work for peace, migrant rights, and economic justice. We hope you enjoy seeing some of the ways that supporters like you are helping us put Quaker values into action for a better future for all.

Special thanks to our monthly donors, our Partners for Peace, for their ongoing support to make all our work possible.
