Hi there -- it’s Roger here at the DNC.

Every year in May, we recognize and celebrate the rich impact of the Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander communities.

But like many from our community, I’m thinking of the AANHPI community all year round. I’m thinking about not only the many contributions we are making across industries, but also the impact we make in political and social change through our growing engagement in politics.

I grew up in the immigrant enclave of Woodside, Queens. In 1976, my parents fled China under Mao’s communist regime and settled in New York. Neither of them had finished school beyond third or fourth grade. They both worked multiple jobs, leaving home at 7 AM and returning some 16 hours later. While my parents were providing for our family, my grandparents were caring for my siblings and me.

I was not always a model student or a good kid growing up in New York, and like my story, the AANHPI community and our shared experiences are not a monolith. And our varied stories, voices, and lived experiences are what make the Democratic party that much stronger through our representation and the causes we fight for.

I’m proud that President Biden and Vice President Harris have been champions in embracing the AANHPI community by combatting AANHPI hate, promoting economic opportunities for small businesses, improving health care systems that often provide care for our elders, addressing housing discrimination while protecting renters, and making sure the AANHPI community is represented across the country -- including in our judicial system.

So today, I’m hoping you’ll join us on our organizing tool, Reach, to share the impact of the Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander communities.
