Dear Friend,
As summer travel kicks off, I have an exciting update. On May 16, 2024 President Biden signed the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2024 into law. This important legislation will rein in airline fees, create more aviation jobs, and strengthen safety. As a member of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, I was proud to help pass the bipartisan FAA Reauthorization Act and to have several of my priorities included. We secured some key wins for North Texas travelers and for the aviation industry, a powerhouse of our local economy.
Some of My Priorities Included in the FAA Reauthorization:
- My bill, the Brian McDaniel Flight Safety Act, will codify into law helicopter safety measures. It’s named after Brian McDaniel, a Dallas firefighter who tragically died in a helicopter crash.
- A ban on airlines from charging extra fees for parents to sit with their young kids.
- Requiring airlines to refund passengers when their flight is delayed, canceled or changed, and may also reimburse passengers for hotel and meal costs in certain cases.
- Investing in air traffic controllers and setting new hiring targets to ensure the controllers and management workforce can meet increased travel demand.
- Strengthening and diversifying the U.S. aviation workforce programs, including similar language as my bill, the Flight Education Access Act, which supports our pilot workforce pipeline.
- Directing the FAA to update onboard emergency kits to include life-saving Naloxone and Narcan to treat overdoses from drugs like fentanyl.
- Increased investment for the Airport Improvement Program which provides grants for airports like Dallas-Fort Worth and Dallas Love Field. I helped secure $4 billion per year in the program.
As a member of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, and the Subcommittee on Aviation, I’m proud of the bipartisan work we’ve done to deliver for the North Texans. The FAA Reauthorization Act builds on progress we’ve made through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to improve DFW and Love Field airports and make the travel experience smoother and safer for folks. This critical bill ensures that the United States continues to lead the world in aviation safety and aerospace innovation and I’m proud to have worked across the aisle to get this done.
