Yesterday, I introduced the Mental Health Emergency Needs in Disasters (MEND) Act. Following the devastating flooding in Vermont last year, it became increasingly clear that mental health care was missing from federal disaster recovery programs.
The MEND Act establishes a FEMA grant program to deploy long term mobile mental health crisis units after a major disaster. These units will provide professional counseling, establish peer support networks, and more. The MEND Act also authorizes critical research on the impact of natural disasters on mental health and substance abuse disorders.
Natural disasters can be incredibly traumatic, and I’m committed to working across the aisle to secure support for more robust disaster recovery.
To anyone reading this email who experienced the Vermont floods or other natural disasters: I see you, and I’m fighting to get the MEND Act passed in Congress to ensure that victims have the mental health resources they need to fully recover.
