John, We've just scored two major legal victories against Big Tobacco that protect local governments' right to pass laws that protect kids – including laws ending the sale of flavored tobacco products. -
In Ohio today, a judge declared unconstitutional a state law, supported by Big Tobacco, that would strip communities of their authority to enact measures aimed at reducing tobacco use.
- In Oregon last month, the state Court of Appeals rejected the tobacco industry's challenge to a local law ending flavored tobacco sales.
In both cases, we helped local governments fight the tobacco industry in court, and we won.
The Ohio victory allows Columbus and other Ohio communities to continue enforcing their laws prohibiting sales of flavored tobacco products, which are fueling our country's youth nicotine addiction crisis.
The Oregon victory is an important step toward implementing laws passed by Washington County and Multnomah County (the Portland metropolitan area) ending the sale of flavored tobacco. And it means our organizers there can keep working to get other Oregon communities to follow their lead.
But Big Tobacco isn't going to stop challenging these life-saving local laws – and our legal team will keep fighting them in courts across the country.
