Hello Friend,
Like you, my
family and I are sheltering in place as our nation grapples with this
crisis. It has definitely been a time of significant change and
sacrifice, but also a time to really reflect on what is important:
family, community, our health and the special moments that make life
worthwhile.
I know many of you
are struggling with a decrease in wages or loss of employment. The
need is apparent in our food distribution sites which have hundreds of
families turn out each day. The impact on our senior population is
even more evident as requests for grocery delivery or assistance with
simple tasks like picking up medications from the pharmacy, have gone
through the roof.
One thing we need
to remember is that we are in this together. When people ask me what I
love about my district, I say this: I love the people. We are strong,
hardworking, passionate people who care about our community and each
other. We won't just turn away when we see a neighbor in need. We show
up and we get the job done.
That's what I love
about my district and that's how I know we will make it through this
challenging time.
I am grateful for
the many individuals who have stepped up and called their neighbors,
delivered groceries, and provided emotional support for our seniors,
many who don't have family nearby. It is especially important that we
provide support for our seniors in monolingual communities, who may
not have access to the same support systems.
I am proud of the
support that San Francisco has put in place for our vulnerable senior
population, including the formation of a citywide volunteer network to
help seniors and people with disabilities with essential chores, like
shopping for groceries or picking up prescriptions during the
shelter-in-place orders. This is a new program that matches volunteers
with those who need assistance, all while maintaining strict public
health guidelines and social distancing.
Additionally, the Department of Disability and
Aging Services helpline is now available seven days a week, from 8
a.m. to 5 p.m., to connect seniors and adults with disabilities with
services, including food assistance and home care needs, at (415)
355-6700.
For more
information about how to get connected as a volunteer visit: sf.gov/covid19volunteer.
If you are in need
or know someone who is in need, please do not hesitate to reach out to
me. I can be reached at (415) 404-9968. I will do whatever I can to
make sure you and your family are safe and supported.
Sincerely,
Ahsha
