Inside Immigration Newsletter

OVERVIEW FROM THE CEO (JAMES MASSA)

Facts without the Media Spin

NumbersUSA has long provided an Accuracy Guarantee for information we provide and cringe when we see misinformation in the media. Recently, we were pleased to see VOX provide a series of charts in an article that were mostly from the same government sources NumbersUSA uses. Yet, we strongly disagree with their supposition presented which was:

"The US's immigration system simply was not designed or resourced to deal with the types of people arriving today: people from a growing variety of countries, fleeing crises and seeking asylum, often with their families. And that's a broader problem that neither Biden, nor any president, can fix on their own."

Better immigration IS possible and it starts with every President and administration enforcing the immigration laws passed by Congress. Yes, there is room for improvement and NumbersUSA has very specific recommendations for policies and laws that would implement the recommendations of the last congressional bipartisan commission on immigration.

Month of Short Messages for you to forward to friends and Congress

Congress is going to slip into an election year lull where members are home campaigning. Little will be addressed until September that could actually address the border crisis or lower overall immigration numbers. Over the next several months NumbersUSA is going to shift our weekly Inside Immigration newsletter to be a daily immigration fact you can forward and action you can take. This is your chance to ensure that when Congress does return its focus to immigration, it will be with the knowledge of your well-informed voice having been heard by them in a variety of ways.

Think of this as the NumbersUSA army of activists beginning to soften the political ground on which the next battles will be waged in September.

FEDERAL (GRANT NEWMAN)

Border Numbers Remain Flat and Historic

It's mid-May, which means Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has finally released the April nationwide encounter numbers. At 247,837, April was the fourth month in a row with encounters in the mid 200,000's. If you only looked at CBP's own chart, you'd think things weren't really terrible.

But when we add the context of the last few years...

The larger picture of border encounters is more telling

We're a long way from where things could be. Avoid the temptation of accepting the new normal of an out-of-control border crisis. Check your Action Board and demand that Congress take action to stop it.

Lankford/Murphy Bill Rears its Ugly Head

Senator Schumer has been broadcasting that he wants to resurrect the failed bipartisan Senate border deal, which spectacularly tanked back in early February within a day of its introduction due in great part to the coordinated efforts of NumbersUSA and its coalition partners. Senator Murphy will likely lead the bill and, to his credit, Senator Lankford (who negotiated the original deal) has said he won't vote to proceed to the bill.

This is a purely political move. Democratic Senators have expressed no interest in actually solving the border crisis. The truth is that the bipartisan deal was bad immigration policy, which would have codified the border crisis, mandated catch-and-release, and increased legal immigration. It's no mystery why the White House and impeached DHS Secretary Mayorkas endorsed it. For a quick refresher on the bill, see Jeremy's post from February. For a deep dive, see Jared's commentary.

Chris Murphy Thoughts

If you're wondering how Senator Murphy feels about his own bill. Be prepared next week to take action in opposition, should the Senate attempt to move forward.

Take Action

How does America's mass immigration affect endangered species?

50 years under the Endangered Species Act as federal law, 40% of America's animals and 34% of its plants are threatened with extinction. Habitat loss is the primary threat to species. Immigration-driven population growth is the primary cause of habitat loss. Congress is the primary cause of bad immigration laws. The Executive Branch is the primary cause of bad immigration enforcement (see CBP Encounters graph above).

Allman Brokthers

I have been traveling all over the United States with the mission of promoting economically just immigration policies. I have spoken with students, professors, and grassroot organizations. One of my goals is to remind people that statue-destroying cancel culture should not dictate which facts we accept. My presentations provide people with facts, numbers, and tools to arm themselves with information.

NUMBERS THAT MATTER

250,000 Chain "Reactions: Each Year

Tell Congress a better immigration policy would end chain migration

Each year, the U.S. issues over a quarter-million green cards based on nothing but the fact that the recipient has an extended-family relationship with an earlier immigrant. Each of those quarter million can go on to sponsor additional relatives, who sponsor theirs, and so on, and so on, ad infinitum. America chooses the first immigrant; the chain reaction determines the rest.

The U.S. Commission on Immigration Reform, chaired by the late Barbara Jordan, recommended the creation of a "credible, coherent immigrant and immigration policy" and a "credible, efficient naturalization process" which included the following:

A scale back of family chain-migration by implementing a prioritization of nuclear family relationships to determine who will be admitted through family-based immigration. Spouses and minor children of US citizens would continue to be admitted as first priority.
