Legislative Updates

This week on the Senate floor, we passed my PreK-12 Budget and became one step closer to delivering an education budget that benefits all of our students, teachers, and schools. There are still many hours of negotiations ahead of us with both the Governor’s team and the House of Representatives, but I’m confident that we are moving towards an education budget that builds on the historic investments we made last year and puts our students and educators in an even better position to succeed.

In our budget recommendation this year, some highlights include:

  • A 3.1% increase in foundation allowance, which would bring funding to a historic $9,910 per student
  • More than $122 million in additional funding for our at-risk students, ensuring that the students who need the most help get more support
  • Doubling the funding for English Language Learners across our state
  • $75 million to continue our revolutionary student loan stipend program for teachers
  • Expanding GSRP eligibility so that any family of four making $120,000 per year or less would be able to receive no-cost preschool for 4-year-old students

Community Updates
Last week, I was proud to honor Commander Ray Lopez during our annual Latino Legislative Day up in Lansing. A proud New Boston resident, Mr. Lopez is the State Commander of the VFW, and I’m incredibly honored to be able to serve him in our state’s capitol. Please join me in thanking Commander Lopez for all the work he has done for our veterans and community.

I want to thank everyone who came to our Coffee and Conversation event this past Monday at the Riverview Veterans Memorial Library. We packed the room and had great conversations on education, prescription drug affordability, and a number of other pertinent topics. I’m looking forward to our next in-district event, which we will have more information on in our next eNewsletter.

I thank you for taking the time to stay engaged with our office. If you have any questions or comments on legislation, community issues, or any matter that is important to you please feel free to reach out to my office here.

As an elected representative, I believe in being readily available and transparent because my office is your office.
