What We’re Reading
|
Getting Organized. Lack of national paid sick leave has some workers risking their lives and those of their loved ones to go to work. Within workplaces, contract or employee status
can mean the difference between promised benefits, and nothing. The story of a battle to raise wages for airline workers hints at effective organizing strategies for the future.
It's The Inequality. Low-income people were struggling before the pandemic. Now, coronavirus has left them hanging by a thread. These inequalities are on sharp display in areas with transient wealthy populations like the Hamptons,
where class tensions are breeding frustrations. And the rise of coronavirus has been followed by a wave of anti-Asian hate crimes.
All Systems Down. When America needed decisive action, it was trapped in systemic failures that left the nation scrambling to keep up with the coronavirus. The United States has a disaster relief system designed for moments like this one but it's not working.
That's a familiar experience for Puerto Rico, which was already suffering under colonialism before coronavirus made landfall.
