Lawns to Legumes Neighborhood Demonstration Project

In the summer of 2022, 20 pollinator gardens were installed in residential yards, city parks, and schools throughout Mendota Heights, as part of the Lawns to Legumes neighborhood demonstration project. The project was part of the *Lawns to Legumes [ [link removed] ]* program, offering education and cost-share funding for projects that create pollinator habitat and increase pollinator awareness in Minnesota. The City partnered with Metro Blooms to help design and manage the projects, as well as help with site preparation before planting began. Residents planted their projects using native, pollinator-beneficial plants provided by the grant. These projects replaced traditional turf grass with 2,934 square feet of important food and habitat for our pollinators in Mendota Heights. Funding for the program was provided by the Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund (ENRTF), which targets priority areas benefiting the Rusty Patched Bumblebee, and other at-risk pollinators.

The Lawns to Legumes program also offers individual grants for property owners.

Black Cherry
Tree of the Month: Black Cherry

The Black Cherry is a native deciduous tree in the Rose ("Rosaceae") Family. Its native range includes the midwestern to eastern United States.

In Minnesota, it is native to the central and southeastern regions. The Black Cherry is a medium-sized, fast-growing tree, growing to a height of 50-80feet. Considered a pioneer species in forest communities, it is one of the first to emerge after disturbance; and does well in full-sun to part shade and medium soil moisture.
