Dear John,
In honor of Endangered Species Day today, we are celebrating one of the Boundary Waters’ best: gray wolves! Did you know that there are three Boundary Waters species that are listed under the Endangered Species Act? That’s right - this special landscape is home to the gray wolf, the Canada lynx, and the northern long-eared bat. But what makes a species endangered? An endangered species is at risk of extinction. A species can be listed as endangered at the state, federal, and international level. On the federal level, the endangered species list is managed under the Endangered Species Act.
Gray wolves face a myriad of threats. Unfortunately last month, a bill passed the U.S. House that would reverse their protection as an endangered species. |
