John, this is a pivotal year for America. We are facing a global pandemic during a presidential cycle defined by major ideological questions. Our response to the challenges we face must center dignity and safety for everyone. Now, there are a few things I know about Medicare for All:

All people will have healthcare. Period.

No one will lose healthcare when they switch jobs, or file for unemployment, like the 11 million Americans who have done so in the past week.

No one will die or suffer from preventable harm because they are uninsured, can’t afford the cost of care, or fear medical debt.

The spread of COVID-19 has exposed the dirty truth about our current system: it is designed for corporate profit, NOT healthcare. Essential workers don’t have paid sick leave, hazard pay, or proper protections at work. Nurses, doctors, and medical staff are overworked and hospitals are so understaffed in some areas that confirmed COVID-positive staff are still treating patients. Here in St. Louis, black residents are more exposed to the virus, less protected from it, and are now dying in greater numbers.

There is no time to lose. This has always been a matter of life and death, and the consequences have only become more obvious.

Two days ago, the presidential candidate who championed #MedicareforAll dropped out of the race. But we have power beyond the Oval Office, and we need life-saving intervention now. When I serve as your Congresswoman, I will hold the executive office accountable to the needs of the people every step of the way, regardless of who occupies it.
