Summer is just around the corner, and there is a new permanent federal child nutrition program designed to keep kids fed during the summer months when school is not in session: SUN Bucks (also called Summer EBT). SUN Bucks can be used to purchase groceries and will be issued to an existing SNAP/TANF EBT card or a newly issued Summer EBT card. For the summer of 2024, eligible children will receive $40 per summer month, $120 total.
While SUN Bucks might look similar to P-EBT, a pandemic-era program to support kids, the rules for qualifying are slightly different. Many children will qualify for this benefit automatically, but some will need to apply directly for SUN Bucks.
To learn more about SUN Bucks, including who is eligible and what families can do now to ensure they get this benefit seamlessly, download our flyer or visit the SUN Bucks page on our website.
SNAP HOTLINE IN ACTION
One of our clients was recently sponsored by a local church to move to the United States from Haiti. While this sponsorship helps the client to come to the US, it does not provide them with a social security number or a work visa. This process is long and costly for the client, so they were looking for some resources to help.
The client was given our information and told to call our SNAP Hotline for benefits. After speaking with the client, it was determined that due to the client's immigration status, they were not eligible to apply for SNAP.
Our Hotline Counselor continued to work with the client and was able to connect them with agencies that can assist with their journey to becoming a US citizen, and an agency that will deliver fresh healthy food.
Our clients are the reason we do this work, and we will always do what we can to assist them!
We strive to build a community where all people have the food they need to lead healthy lives. Hunger is preventable. Thank you for your continued support of our work!
