Daniel Perry, an Army sergeant who regularly shared racist, xenophobic content online and fantasized about shooting protesters, drove into a crowd of Black Lives Matter protesters on July 25, 2020, armed with a pistol. Air Force veteran and BLM protester Garret Foster, who was also white, was taking part in the protest and legally open-carrying his AK-47 assault rifle. Perry opened fire, killing Foster while claiming self-defense, which several eyewitness accounts disputed. A jury subsequently convicted Perry of murder, prompting GOP Gov. Greg Abbott to voice his desire at the time to pardon Perry despite the preponderance of evidence and the jury's unanimous verdict. Yesterday, Abbott followed through and let Perry, a convicted murderer, walk free. Make it make sense.
