Hi John,
Today is the start of our nationwide lobbying days for the Fossil Fuel Treaty. All around the country, Global Justice Now activists are meeting their MPs and local councillors, demanding that they endorse the Fossil Fuel Treaty.
We need as many MPs as possible to hear about this global exit plan from fossil fuels, but we know meeting your MP isn’t an option for everyone.
There’s a new motion in parliament that is giving MPs the opportunity to support the Fossil Fuel Treaty publicly. Even if you don’t think your MP will sign it, it’s important for them to know that it matters to their constituents.
Can you write to your MP and ask them to sign the motion in parliament, calling for the UK government to support the Fossil Fuel Treaty?

A parliamentary motion is a great way to raise awareness of this exciting proposal to end fossil fuels among MPs, at a crucial time.
A huge global survey recently found that 89% of people want to see intensified political action on climate and 69% would be willing to contribute financially to the cause. This week, however, a report endorsed by Global Justice Now found that banks have given £5.6 trillion to the fossil fuel industry since the last major global climate target was agreed in 2015.
People want action to halt devastating climate change. We know that the way to achieve this is to quickly transition from fossil fuel use. But with so much money and power behind oil, coal and gas, we need big, bold ideas that tackle these polluting industries head on and demand governments prioritise future generations, as well as the wellbeing of people in climate vulnerable countries in the global south.
The Fossil Fuel Treaty would create a space for governments around the world to plan an end to fossil fuels, quickly and fairly. With other, past treaties helping to manage huge global threats like ozone depleting chemicals and nuclear weapons, we know this is a workable idea that could make a huge impact.
Getting the UK government to support this treaty won’t be simple, that’s why we need to create as much political pressure on top politicians as possible. The Fossil Fuel Treaty has support globally, with politicians around the world included. A growing group of MPs in the UK support it, but we need to get more on board to make the noise required.
With a general election looming, we know MPs will be looking to the issues their constituents care about. This month’s local election results also brought major shocks, which will have left many MPs feeling like they need to work for every vote.
This makes now the perfect time to write to your MP and show them what issues their constituents really care about. Can you write to them about the Fossil Fuel Treaty today?
I’ll write to my MP ([link removed])
Thank you.
