“Medicare for All is really important for my
family.”

That’s how the message began.

“My son was born 10 weeks premature and spent 72 days in the NICU. I was
life-flighted.

“While waiting for me to give birth and try to save the baby, my husband
was worrying about how we would pay for it and organizing a Go Fund Me
page. Now my son is almost 1, and we are seeing the bills roll in.”

I received that text from a supporter yesterday. Thousands of Coloradans
have equally gripping stories to share.

As the speaker of the Colorado House and as the president of Mental Health
Colorado, I spearheaded dozens of measures to improve health care in our
state. We’ve made progress—but not enough.

The system itself is the problem, and it’s bankrupting us. That was true
even before this pandemic hit.

At our town hall [ [link removed] ]today and in the weeks ahead, we’ll discuss ways not
only to conquer the pandemic but also to curb costs, expand coverage, and
improve the quality of care. I support Medicare for All, and I’ve laid out
my plan for it [ [link removed] ]here.

The new mother who texted me yesterday said her son was doing well. She
closed with a simple appeal: “Thank you for fighting for us.”

That’s my pledge to you.
