Our new research on coronavirus + LGBTQ youth
Hi Friend,
Over the past week, the number of calls, chats, and texts from LGBTQ youth to The Trevor Project’s 24/7 crisis services have spiked to double our normal call volume. Mentions of the pandemic have increased more than 60 times over the last month. In fact, 25% of our conversations with LGBTQ youth are now about COVID-19.
Our research team’s new white paper, Implications of COVID-19 for LGBTQ Youth Mental Health and Suicide Prevention ([link removed]) , reveals the pandemic’s negative impact on LGBTQ youth mental health and well-being. In addition to outlining ways that physical distancing, economic strain, and increased anxiety related to COVID-19 may impact LGBTQ youth, we also detail how The Trevor Project is working tirelessly, 24/7, to meet the increased demand of LGBTQ youth seeking support during this pandemic.
As a Lifeline volunteer counselor supporting LGBTQ young people for nearly a decade, I’ve seen first-hand that LGBTQ young people are particularly vulnerable to negative mental health outcomes at this time. During my Lifeline shift last week, every conversation I had was related to COVID-19. One caller expressed the stress of being trapped in a small apartment with their mother and a lack of support as an LGBTQ person. Another worried about losing their job while yet another was in need of desperate support for an ongoing mental health condition. All expressed immense gratitude that The Trevor Project was there for them at a time when so many other sources of support for LGBTQ youth have disappeared.
Thank you for your continued support, and for enabling our life-saving mission. It’s more important than ever to accept and support the LGBTQ young people in our lives, and we appreciate all that the Trevor community has done to show LGBTQ youth that they are loved.
Warmly,
Amit Paley
