Now that the dust has settled on Budget Week, I wanted to write and let you know what it means for us here in McPherson.
While we were all hoping for a Budget that restored our standard of living by addressing cost of living pressures, we instead have one that does little to help Australians get ahead.
Labor’s cost of living crisis has made it so much harder for domestic tourism due to high fuel costs and the fact that so many Australians can’t afford a holiday. Most Australians are struggling to just get by and Labor’s $300 energy rebate, which is less than $1 a day, is hardly going to help. And on top of this Tourism Australia’s funding has actually been cut even though international visitors remain 23% below pre-Covid levels.
While the amended stage three tax cuts will be welcomed by local residents, the reality is these were only possible because the Coalition made provision for them back in 2018. It seems Labor’s wasteful spending will continue for at least another year.
The Budget is a wasted opportunity to actually do something about the housing crisis, security crisis and cost-of-living crisis. Labor’s massive immigration intake is hurting seniors and families with increased pressure on services including hospitals, schools and transport. Labor’s big claims about building more houses have simply not been delivered. Homeowners seeking relief from high interest rates could now be waiting even longer as Labor’s Budget puts more upward pressure on interest rates.
And while more people move to the Gold Coast each year, there was not even a mention in the Budget of upgrading heavy rail from Varsity to the Airport. In addition to this, it is now clear Labor is losing control of our borders.
In his Budget Reply speech, Peter Dutton announced a number of key measures that a Coalition Government will deliver if successful at the next election – including cutting the migration rate to 140,000 and reducing foreign student numbers, freeing-up 100,000 homes and allowing our infrastructure to catch up.
It's more apparent every day that Australia cannot afford another three years of Labor. I encourage you to take the time to read about the Coalition’s plans.
