The outcome of a recent Georgia court case will impact thousands of voters.
Here’s some background: Eight pro-voter advocacy groups, including Georgia Coalition for the People’s Agenda, and one Georgia voter filed a lawsuit against Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, challenging the “exact match” citizenship process for matching naturalized citizens’ voter registrations with the state’s citizenship records.
The case alleged that the citizenship matching process inaccurately flagged qualified U.S. citizens as non-citizens, resulting in delays in registration or denial of registrations. But the judge ruled in favor of the state and dismissed the case.
This result will throw unjust roadblocks in front of potential voters. A number of citizens find their registrations “on hold” under this system, and often, would-be voters with registration issues do not speak English and face other barriers to navigating the process.
Rulings like this prove that our courts are not doing their job — which makes our work even more important. We must keep combating voter disenfranchisement and protect and expand the right to vote to mitigate the damage coming from the courts.
This collaborative, on-the-ground work helps more voters make their voices heard. Can you split a donation today between Fair Fight Action and The People’s Agenda to help advance this mission?
Raffensperger tried to call out the pro-democracy movement in a statement about the case, saying, "This system works. Failed attempts by figures like Stacey Abrams and her organization, Fair Fight, to challenge citizenship verification in court have been consistently unsuccessful.” And he spread false information about a made-up problem: “U.S. elections should be decided by U.S. citizens, and the undocumented ‘blue wave’ will never reach Georgia.” Only U.S. citizens are eligible to vote in our elections — meaning Raffensperger’s statement is anti-immigrant and clearly shows how anti-voting lawmakers are trying to strip away the right to vote.
Across the board, courts are failing to protect voting rights, which means we need resources to push back harder and organize with our partners to inform and educate communities about their options. Your donation today will be split between our organizations to fuel this critical work as we look towards November.
We’ll keep fighting — thank you for being at our side.
