Dear John,
House Speaker Melissa Hortman announced in a press conference that the so-called Equal Rights Amendment will be up for a vote in the Minnesota House tomorrow. She also says that Democrats have the votes in the Minnesota Senate, which would mean relying on the vote of Senator Nicole Mitchell (DFL-Woodbury) who has been charged with 1st Degree Burglary.
Friends, we have been fighting to defeat this bill and we will keep fighting. Please pray with us that this bill is defeated, either in the Minnesota Senate or the Minnesota House. Here's what you can do in addition to prayer:
-
If you haven't already, contact your legislators and tell them the so-called ERA is wrong for Minnesota.
-
Watch the House floor session - it will start at 11 AM, but it will probably last into the early hours of Saturday morning, and we do not know yet when the ERA will come up.
-
If you can, join our team at the Capitol starting at 11 AM tomorrow. Please wear red and you can email us to ask if signs are available. Prayer outside the House Chambers is recommended.
-
Be on the lookout for a vote in the Minnesota Senate, possibly on Saturday. This will be another opportunity to pray and peacefully protest at the Capitol.
More about the ERA:
WATCH - Our Rally Against the ERA
By banning discrimination on the basis of "gender identity or expression," this bill would allow males to enter female-only accommodations such as sports teams and changing facilities. And that's not all: by banning discrimination on the basis of "pregnancy," progressives are attempting to add protections that would create a right to unfettered access to abortion on demand into the Minnesota Constitution.
"The state shall not discriminate against any person in intent or effect on account of one or more of the following...sex, including but not limited to: making and effectuating decisions about all matters relating to one's own pregnancy or decision whether to become or remain pregnant; gender identity or gender expression; or sexual orientation.
- Proposed ERA Language
You may have noticed something that is NOT in the proposed amendment: religion. If the Legislature wants to protect rights, it should include religious freedom, to make it clear that the Minnesota Constitution gives religious individuals and organizations the same protections as other categories, and protects the ability of those organizations to operate and live consistent with their religious beliefs.
Please take a few moments to let your Minnesota legislators know where you stand and ask them to OPPOSE the ERA.
