Hi John, it’s the team at the Jane Fonda Climate PAC.

During a recent all-team call, we realized that most of us are avid podcast listeners, and we couldn’t stop talking about one episode in particular… The Daily’s May 7th climate episode, which made a stark revelation about our planet's health:

Our oceans are warming at rates that could soon reach a catastrophic tipping point.

We all agree this episode is a must-listen for anyone who cares about the climate crisis, but if you’re short on time, here’s the gist:

As ocean temperatures rise, coral reefs — the very foundation of marine biodiversity — are experiencing bleaching at alarming rates, disrupting ecosystems and the marine life that depend on them.

Coral reefs not only protect coastlines from the erosive forces of waves and storms, they’re a lifeline for local economies — contributing hundreds of millions of dollars to businesses and providing countless jobs through fishing, diving, and snorkeling. Not to mention, coral reefs are a vital food source and a treasure trove for medical research, offering prospects for new medicines that could cure diseases like cancer.

What’s more, this unprecedented warming is setting the stage for what could be a historic hurricane season this year. The season is set to begin on June 1, and there’s no telling the scale of damage hurricanes could inflict on communities across the country, but this is also a clear environmental justice issue. Gulf cities, home to large communities of color, are often hit hardest by hurricanes. As the threat of hurricanes grows, these communities, already burdened by pollution and high levels of poverty, face new dangers they are ill-equipped to manage.

But the scariest part of the whole podcast was about the effects of global warming on the Greenland ice sheet. Scientists believe it could lead to a complete collapse of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC). AMOC plays a huge role in regulating the weather and climate across the globe. If AMOC collapses, everything we know about life on Earth could change. The last time something like this happened was almost 13,000 years ago, and we were plunged into an Ice Age where we lost entire civilizations.

Our mission at Jane PAC has never been clearer or more urgent. We need to do everything in our power to support and elect leaders who are aware of these urgent challenges and prepared to take bold actions to address them. We must advocate for policies that protect our oceans, reduce global carbon emissions, and ensure our planet remains a livable home for future generations.

We are at a pivotal moment where our actions can either tip the scales toward recovery or complete disaster. We’re asking you to choose action today and support Jane PAC with a donation of any amount. Your gift will allow us to direct resources to elect climate champions up and down the ballot, all across the country, this year.

If you've saved your payment information with ActBlue Express, your donation will go through immediately:

Together, we can answer the ocean’s SOS before it’s too late.
