Dear John ,
You have a great opportunity to help defend democracy by registering high school students to vote before the end of the school year. The attached materials ([link removed]) from The Civics Center ([link removed]) offer easy ways to approach students, teachers, guidance counselors and other administrators.
Considering that approximately 40% of this year's 4M seniors will not attend college in the fall, this is our last chance to reach and register them.
The Civics Center offers a non-partisan approach to registering. Here are some non-partisan ways you could inspire high school seniors to register soon:
* Eighteen year olds earned the voting privilege via the 27th Amendment, passed after the Vietnam War. 61% of the servicemen who died during that war were younger than 21, 20% were under 20, and 5 were just 16 years old. Your vote honors their sacrifice.
* For women students, cite the heroic efforts of Susan B. Anthony and other suffragettes to give women the national right to vote. Your vote honors the suffragettes.
* Many immigrants and refugees to the United States say they want to become citizens so they can vote. Many have lived where voting was not an option or a complete sham. They are taught that voting is both a right and a responsibility. Cherish your privilege to vote by registering and then voting responsibly.
* Be the change you want to see. All of you have opinions on how life in the United States can be improved, and we need your fresh thoughts and energy. Register to vote and become part of the solution to the various challenges our country faces. Register to vote and demonstrate your commitment to maintaining a strong democracy. Voting is your way and your voice that says “I want to preserve our democratic republic”!
* Your choice of candidate or your position on an issue may not always win. But don’t lose heart; informed citizens also learn from defeat at the polls, and recognize that losing is part of the democratic process. So register and become a proud and active citizen of the United States. Register to vote, vote responsibly, and keep the republic alive!
Thank You,
The Union
