The Trump administration is putting our health at even greater risk.
John,
About 35 million people in the United States have asthma or another lung disease, putting them at especially high risk from the coronavirus.
And yet the EPA Administrator and former fossil-fuel lobbyist, Andrew Wheeler, recently announced an environmental enforcement freeze.
This puts our communities at greater risk by allowing industries to spew unchecked pollution into the air — pollution that can trigger asthma attacks and even heart attacks.
Trump and his EPA are making the public health crisis worse. That's why during this time of crisis we're still fighting back to force the EPA to do its job.
While the federal administration should be working to mass produce vitally important respirators,Trump's administration is instead using this crisis as an opportunity to push his environment-killing agenda, and ramp up profits for giant corporations and his Big Oil & Gas allies.
This new rollback is stunning: industrial facilities, oil refineries and other polluters no longer have to control or even monitor their emissions, so long as they list coronavirus as the reason — all while the EPA provides little oversight to ensure the truthfulness of such claims.
This environmental enforcement shutdown will hit low income communities and communities of color especially hard. Industrial facilities have set up shop in those areas, and those living near these facilities disproportionately suffer from lung diseases like asthma.
This means more pollution, more asthma attacks and even more heart attacks. With medical facilities already overrun with coronavirus patients, more people will likely die because they can't get the routine care they needed.
A green light for more air pollution in the middle of a respiratory disease health emergency is like pouring gasoline on a fire.
We won’t rest until the Trump administration backs off. We’re mobilizing the public and raising awareness. Together we’ll fight back to block this major new attack on our health.
