Friend,
The NRA begins their annual meeting today, where the “nation's top Second Amendment leaders” will push their ‘guns everywhere’ agenda.
This year, the NRA is hosting their annual meeting in Texas, a permitless carry state without universal background checks or an assault weapons ban. Texas is also home to some of the worst mass shootings in our nation’s history:

In 2017, a gunman killed 26 people with an AR-15 at a church in Sutherland Springs, TX.
In 2019, a white supremacist killed 23 people with an AK-47 at a Walmart in El Paso, TX.
In 2022, a gunman killed 19 children and two adults with an AR-15 at an elementary school in Uvalde, TX. Merely three days later, the NRA held that year’s annual meeting in the same state.
In 2023, a gunman killed eight people with an AR-15 at a mall in Allen, TX.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott is set to headline the meeting. He has refused to take action to protect Texans from gun violence – in fact, he’s actually worked to loosen the state’s gun laws. In 2021, he repealed the state’s concealed carry permitting laws. He even refused to pass gun violence prevention legislation in the wake of the tragedy in Uvalde. During his tenure, gun deaths have increased by 63% in the state.
NRA darling Donald Trump will return to the annual meeting this year. The NRA spent $30 million to elect him in 2016 and it paid off: He spent his presidency installing Second Amendment extremists in federal courts and his appointees to the Supreme Court were essential in an NRA victory in the Bruen decision in 2022, which the gun lobby has used to try and hack away at gun laws across the country.
One person will be notably absent from the events this weekend: Former President Wayne LaPierre. He’ll have to miss this time around after stepping down from his position in disgrace and being found guilty of mishandling millions of dollars of NRA money during his tenure.
