Alex Lee was elected in 2020 to represent District 24, his hometown, in the California State Assembly. Upon his victory he became the youngest Asian American legislator ever elected, as well as the first openly bisexual state legislator in California history.
Now, Assemblymember Lee is at the forefront of progressive change in California. Since being elected, he has introduced legislation to address the housing crisis by protecting tenants’ rights and creating social housing for all. Young people are especially vulnerable to the public housing crisis and rising rent prices, but thanks to the work of leaders like Lee, social housing programs are filling in the gaps with mixed-income housing that is affordable and financially self-sustaining.
As a young member of the LGBTQ+ community, Lee is also stepping up to combat inequality and discrimination in our government. This year, he introduced a bill to create an LGBTQ+ Commission with a hand in policymaking and oversight in the California State Assembly. Discriminatory laws are silencing and threatening the livelihoods of LGBTQ+ people nationwide, but this commission would allow for young LGBTQ+ community members to feel represented by their elected officials.
