Indivar Dutta-Gupta to Appear on C-SPAN to Discuss 60th Anniversary of War on Poverty
Mark your calendars: On Monday, May 20, at 8:30 a.m., CLASP Executive Director and President Indi Dutta-Gupta will appear on C-SPAN’s Washington Journal to discuss the legacy of the Great Society and War on Poverty programs. It’s Mental Health Awareness Month. Let’s Talk About Maternal Mental Health.
The United States has the highest maternal mortality rate [[link removed]] of any high-income country. Research shows that four out of five pregnancy-related deaths over the last several years were preventable, with mental health conditions [[link removed]] being the most frequent underlying cause. We must continue the conversation on maternal health and maternal mental health and advocate for investments to support women and pregnant people across the country.

Advancing Equity: The Case for Updating Apprenticeship Programs
CLASP joined with the National Taskforce on Tradeswomen’s Issues and other partners to express support for proposed changes to the National Apprenticeship system that would enhance accessibility for women and workers of color. However, we also raised concerns [[link removed]] about the absence of a living wage, flexible exceptions for minimum hours, and costs of end-point assessments.

The Science of Engaging Youth in Health Research, Practice, and Policy
In October 2023, CLASP’s Nia West-Bey and the New Deal for Youth‘s Joseph Yusuf participated in a National Academies two-day virtual workshop on the science of engaging youth in research, practice, and policy to advance youth well-being. National Academies published the proceedings of the event in a brief this month.

On May 3, the Biden Administration announced a final rule extending affordable health coverage to young immigrants who are DACA recipients. This rule will remove barriers in the Affordable Care Act marketplace to affordable health coverage for thousands of young immigrants.
