With Pennsylvania being a key battleground state, our staff are out on the ground in our centered communities, working to ensure that voters have what they need to make their voices heard. But as a recent article published by Capital B News points out, “voter apathy is real,” especially among Black voters and other marginalized communities who have the power to decide the outcome of the November elections.

One reason for this apathy may be a lack of civic education in the classroom. This is partly because of a coordinated effort by groups such as Moms for Liberty that have set out to disrupt how and what our children are taught in schools. That’s why team NPP meets people where they are: in places of recreation, worship, educational institutions, social and fraternal clubs, frequented retail establishments, and community events year-round and engages in meaningful conversations around the issues that matter most.

Here’s what our CEO Kadida has to say: “People concentrate their efforts on college campuses, but most young folks don’t go to college. We go to barbershops and beauty salons. We go to trade centers and trade schools and community colleges.”

This work is essential because, as the article also points out, voter apathy will present a major problem heading into November. “Presidential and statewide races are routinely decided by razor-thin margins…Organizers are worried that a combination of exasperation with the political system and intensifying anti-Black voting legislation might throttle turnout during a critical election year.”
