Friends, if you’ve been reading my emails for a while, you know that I like to share what’s on my mind – and you also may have noticed that you haven’t gotten an email from me in a few weeks.
Last Monday, my grandma, Joan Jacobs, passed away. It was a big loss for our family.
I am the woman I am today because I am her granddaughter.

After four sons (and then my brother), I was her first girl. Rumor has it that there was nothing pink left in San Diego the day I was born because she bought it all. And she spent every day making sure I knew I was special and loved.
She pushed me and everyone around her to be the best versions of themselves. She taught me that it was possible to be feminine and strong and opinionated. That I could be a wife and mother and grandmother, and also a leader.
She taught me the importance of giving back and never taking for granted the things life gave me. That it was my responsibility to use the privileges I’d been given to make San Diego and the world better and fairer. She taught me the importance of art and theater and music. She was one of the most stylish and fashionable women I’ve ever known. She was a matriarch in every sense of the word, and not just of our family but of all of San Diego.
I will forever cherish the time we spent together and always remember the lessons she taught me. And I’ll teach them to my children too one day.
In grief and gratitude,
Sara Jacobs
