John, $98 PER PERSON As a former Navy SEAL, I’m not intimidated by much. I’ve been around the world and fought on battlefields against enemy soldiers in hand-to-hand combat. As an aerial firefighter, I’ve piloted planes through some of the most intense wildfires imaginable. While I’ve had some thrilling experiences, I’ve never feared the challenges that have been put before me – I assess each situation and determine how best to achieve the desired outcome with minimal harm to myself or to my team. Last June 27th I declared my candidacy to be the next U.S. Senator for Montana – it was the first time in longer than I can remember that my new day job didn’t involve the risk of serious injury or even death. But just because I’m not putting myself in harm’s way at present, I’m still in the line of fire. When I was deciding whether to challenge Jon Tester last spring, I did some digging to find out how much a U.S. Senate campaign costs and what I’d have to raise to be competitive against the last statewide elected Democrat. What I discovered shocked me. OVER $70 MILLION WAS SPENT IN 2018 – AT THE TIME THE COSTLIEST FEDERAL RACE IN MONTANA’S HISTORY. CAMPAIGNS AND OUTSIDE SUPER PACS SPENT MORE THAN $98 PER PERSON TO INFLUENCE THEIR VOTE. Given that my opponent raised more than $20 million last year the 2018 record won’t stand. While I’m not scared of the task ahead of me, it is daunting to imagine raising the money I’ll need to successfully win this election. By some estimates that sum will be more than $100 million dollars. I know we’re not going to raise the money we need all at once – or even in a year’s time. What I do know is that we will raise it. We’re setting goals each day – and if we continue to hit them, we’ll eventually get to where we need to be. I’m coming to you today to let you know that we’re aiming to raise $999 today.
