The annual summit you’ve probably never heard of has been to London and jetted off home.
Hi John
Imagine this: A global summit for new oil and gas 'business opportunities' - sponsored by companies like Shell, Exxon Mobil and Total - held in a secret location revealed just 24 hours before it starts.
There ain't nothing dodgy about that, right?! 🤮
This week, XRUK stood with allies including Stop EACOP, Women of Colour and 350 Africa to shed light on the real purpose of The Africa Energies Summit - "Big oil makes multibillion-dollar profits while marginalising and impoverishing millions of Africans, who suffer disasters, loss of livelihoods and human rights violations." [1]
💰 Despite being among Africa's biggest oil producers, South Sudan is the world's poorest country and Nigeria has the highest share of global population living in extreme poverty
Voices of resistance movements from across Africa were amplified this week. We rallied together to make a clear demand: Africa's energy system should be owned by Africans and work for Africans.
A future that everyone must see is one where Africa's renewable energy potential is realised - it has 39% of the worlds potential, more than any other continent. So, until progress is made "we fight not because we are belligerent but because our lives depend on fighting" as Hardi Yakubu, from Africans Rising, said.
Taking action to block new oil and gas is vital. XRUK must continue working with allies to pressurise the UK government and share the truth with the UK public. Help to shift the power and break down the systemic injustices that the UK's oppressive systems force onto Africa.
