Hey, John,
If you don’t know me, my name is Robert Reives. I currently serve as the Minority Leader in the North Carolina House of Representatives, where I have had the honor of representing my home in Chatham County for the last decade. As Minority Leader, I spend a lot of time working with our Democrats in the House to effectively combat Republican overreach and show the voters of our state that a better, common-sense way to govern is only an election away.
It isn’t always an easy job—I probably don’t have to tell you that one of our party’s strengths is that it’s a big tent, which is why I’ve always appreciated my friend, Wesley Harris. Wesley understands that, wherever you fall on the ideological spectrum, we aren’t going to be able to get any of our policy goals through if we can’t retake a governing majority in the General Assembly.
That’s why I was so excited when Wesley let me know he was going to be running for Treasurer this year. Although I will sorely miss being able to lean on his economic policy chops in the House, I know that as a statewide candidate, Wesley brings that same commitment to not just winning his own race, but to a long-term vision for Democrats to retake our state and govern again.
Like me, Wesley is from rural North Carolina. And although Taylorsville is a little hillier than where I was raised in Lee County, he grew up knowing many of the same struggles that my family did—and that families all across North Carolina deal with every day. He knows how to get out to our rural areas and actually talk to folks and make them feel like they matter, and that’s the path to winning those places back. His campaign is about more than just his own race. It’s a movement for our entire state.
Right now, North Carolina is at an inflection point. We’re 41st in the country for teacher pay. 1 in every 4 state jobs is vacant. Working families in communities from Murphy to Manteo are being priced out of homes they’ve lived in for decades. Whether or not North Carolina will be a place where anyone can follow the American dream depends on the outcome of this election. We have a lot to fight for, and Wesley’s campaign is one of our best assets in the battle ahead.
But he and I need your help to get there. Unlike the Republican Party, as Democrats, we don’t have the luxury of relying on a couple of billionaire mega-donors to swoop in and fund our campaigns.
