Dear John, When my child came out to my husband and me, we knew just what to do. We expressed our love unconditionally. We were lucky because our church did the same. But when Bryan, who now identifies as non-binary, wanted to come out at school and the broader community, we said no. It was the 1990s. It was the Midwest. We definitely didn’t see a lot of rainbow flags in those days, and we were afraid for Bryan's safety. Looking back, I believe we were wrong to ask Bryan to deny themselves outside our family and our church community. Even more importantly, I believe that’s a situation no child, and no parent, should ever have to face without the support of others who really know what this experience is like. As I look back, I didn't know what I didn't know. That’s why there’s PFLAG. Give OUT Day – the only national day of giving dedicated to supporting the LGBTQ+ community – is on May 30, and I and my fellow board members of PFLAG National have committed to matching all donations to PFLAG National between now and May 30, up to a total of $30,000. Please give generously. I know now how being part of PFLAG could have helped us affirm and support Bryan during that difficult time. I’ve learned so much since that day Bryan came out to my husband and me. PFLAG National works tirelessly to advocate against anti-LGBTQ+ legislation aimed at harming our loved ones; expand our outreach to families and engage the broadest diversity of cultures, ethnicities, races, ages, abilities, and faith communities; and much more, all while leading with love. That’s why I’m proud to serve as Vice Chair of PFLAG National’s Board of Directors and help ensure anyone who needs PFLAG can find PFLAG. In honor of Give OUT Day, please donate to PFLAG National and help us reach our goal of $30,000, which will be matched by the PFLAG National Board of Directors. Thank you for the opportunity to share my family’s story with you. You’re truly making a difference in the lives of so many people. Gratefully, |
