ACTION ALERT: Don’t Let Congress Undermine the National Environmental Policy Act
TAKE ACTION: [link removed]
When the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) was signed into law in 1970, it established a national framework for protecting our environment. It gave people like you and me, for the first time, a formal voice in environmental decisions. Now we need to take action to protect NEPA.
NEPA guides how federal agencies engage communities and consider the environmental impacts of their proposed projects, allowing public review and feedback on actions that impact birds, other wildlife, and our communities. Countless species from Bald Eagles to Western Bluebirds have benefited from this bedrock law. Because of NEPA, communities on the front lines of major projects have a seat at the decision-making table.
The White House Council on Environmental Quality recently issued a final rule restoring key elements of NEPA that were weakened under the last administration. The new rule increases the efficiency of federal permitting, prioritizes environmental justice, and addresses the climate crisis.
Restoring NEPA is a huge win in protecting communities from environmental harm, as well as habitats that birds and other wildlife depend on for their survival. But Congress is preparing to weaken the new rule before it’s even implemented.
Keep Congress from dismantling common-sense improvements to our bedrock environmental law. Tell your U.S. Representative and your U.S. Senators that you support restoring NEPA to help protect birds, the places they need, and the communities in which we live.
