Yesterday morning, my team launched our unofficial mid-month fundraising drive for a simple but very important reason: We're pacing behind on our goals, and we can't afford to fall short of them.

Not here in the month of May, and definitely not with less than 100 days to go in this primary. In fact, tonight at midnight marks halfway to our final quarterly FEC fundraising deadline before election day.

I mean it when I say that every contribution between now and then, no matter the amount, will send a critical message about the strength of our campaign.

That's because after our official deadline ends, everyone — the media, the super PACs, our primary opponents, our progressive allies, and more — will be able to check how much we've raised and how many donations we've received.

And believe us, they will. But the honest truth is that your support today is about a lot more than putting up big numbers or keeping up appearances.

As you know, it takes an obscene amount of resources to run a winning campaign. Especially for grassroots, people-powered ones like ours. That's because the right wing and billionaires like Harlan Crow see me as one of their top-priority targets in Congress, and are getting ready to do and spend whatever it takes to defeat us.

They're going to drive up the cost of television spots in our district. They're going to try and drown out our digital outreach. And they're going to launch lie after lie and attack after attack to make it happen.

We need to build the kind of campaign that has what it takes to fight back and win.
